Calorie density
Choosing foods with fewer calories per pound is the main way to lose weight without counting calories.
AgreesChef AJ's program opens the day with a pound or more of non-starchy vegetables, eats foods in order of rising density and stops at comfortably full. She says calories do count, but that counting them does not last.

Nuts and seeds
Nuts and seeds should be cut out or strictly limited for weight loss.
AgreesHer 2017 program allowed up to an ounce a day; she stopped eating nuts, seeds and avocado herself around 2012 and says dropping nuts is what made her lose weight. She still calls them healthy foods that are simply calorie-dense.

Oil
Added oil should be cut out completely for weight loss.
AgreesOil is one of only three things she says everyone should avoid, with animal products and alcohol. In November 2025, while being treated for cancer, she said she was no longer strictly free of salt, oil and sugar herself.
